Moscow, Febuary 19, 1999 - His holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia, the 15th patriarch in its history, who governs together with the Holy Synod. Patriarch Alexy II, head since 1990 of the Russian Orthodox Church, celebrated his 70th birthday.
In an interview with Itar-Tass-Agency, Patriarch Alexy welcomed Russia's "second baptism" - the revival of the Orthodox Church in Russia since the demise of the officially atheist Soviet state in 1991.
"I believe in our people, in its spiritual powers ... and devotion to spiritual and cultural tradition," he was quoted as saying. The role of Russian and his own should be "...to make the faith the center of thoughts, feelings and deeds of any person who wants to be an Orthodox Christian."
"The Patriarch could not fail to note there is a certain danger from pseudo-religions, from spiritually alien 'conquistadors' who are ruining, willingly or unwillingly, the spiritual integrity of Russian society," Tass said. Orthodox Christianity is a Christian religion, the people of Russia practice for more than 1000 years. In the Orthodoxy are deeply rooted its culture, identity and estimation.
